Health Information

Each year, doctors treat more than 3 million sports-related injuries in children and teens. And no matter how grown-up these athletes may look on the playing field or the balance beam, when they're hurt, they need medical care that addresses their unique needs as growing young people. That's why Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters -- the name parents have trusted for almost 50 years for their children's health care -- has created the region's only sports medicine program just for young athletes.

What conditions do you treat?

Where do you see patients?

We offer emergency appointments every day, and our physicians are always on call for patients who come to the CHKD Emergency Center with sports-related injuries. We also see patients at CHKD and at our CHKD Health Centers in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake, the Kempsville area of Norfolk, the Oyster Point area of Newport News and the Princess Anne area of Virginia Beach.

Do I need a referral to make an appointment?

This depends on what kind of insurance you have. If you have an HMO, you must:

  • Get a referral from your child's primary care physician before you call to make an appointment.
  • Make sure that your referral has not expired. Many are good for only 30 days, so check yours before you come to your appointment. If your referral has expired, call your primary care physician and explain your situation. In most cases, your primary care physician will provide a new or extended referral.
  • Bring the referral with you to the appointment. If you do not have a referral, or if the referral you have is expired, your HMO will not pay for your appointment.

If you have fee-for-service insurance or a PPO, you do not need a physician's referral to make an appointment.

We offer in-depth information about insurance in our Billing and Insurance section.
