Perioperative 101 Internship (Registered Nurses only)
The Perioperative 101 Internship program is a 6 month, paid internship designed to teach registered nurses skills needed to work in the perioperative environment. The program consists of 5-6 weeks of classroom instruction and 16-20 weeks of clinical orientation in both the scrub and circulating role. This comprehensive curriculum includes 26 topic areas, nine of which are specific to the types of surgeries and patients seen at CHKD. Topics covered include:
- Scrubbing, gowning and gloving;
- Anesthesia;
- Assessment and position of the operative patient; and
- 4 rotations in Day Surgery, PACU, Anesthesia and SPD.
RNs that complete this program leave with the knowledge and skill set required to work in the perioperative setting. If you are looking for a challenging and fast-paced career, perioperative nursing at CHKD is it. Contact a recruiter to inquire further about this opportunity.
Emergency Nursing Internship Program
This 18-week internship program is designed to provide the newly graduated registered nurse with the knowledge to work as an entry-level pediatric emergency department nurse.
Current concepts in emergency nursing as they apply to the pediatric population are presented in a core theory course. The course follows the Emergency Nurses Association programs entitled: “Orientation to Emergency Nursing; Competencies and Critical Thinking” and “Core Curriculum for Pediatric Emergency Nursing” along with Sheehy’s “Emergency Nursing Principles and Practice.”
Pediatric, critical care and emergency nursing concepts are taught during the 18-week program. Guest lecturers, including emergency attending physicians, emergency department nurses, nurse specialists from other departments, and auxiliary staff augment these theory classes to provide the nuances of pediatric emergency care. The intern’s learning will be enhanced by weekly case presentations on various pediatric medical and surgical problems that the interns present.
This transition experience integrates emergency nursing theory and emergency department skills under the guidance of an experienced RN preceptor. This direct patient care experience is designed to provide the intern with opportunities to apply core theory and acquire the expertise necessary to deliver competent care. The nurse intern, preceptor and the education team will develop learning objectives and review progress regularly during the internship to ensure professional growth and competence.
