CHKD offers classes for kids, teens, parents and grandparents. We offer classes on many subjects and most are free of charge, but registration is required because space is limited.

You may not be able to register for all classes online, please call (757) 668-7500 or (800) 395-2453 to register or to get more information about a class.

ACL Injury Prevention Program
Research has shown that the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in female athletes can be reduced by as much as 72-80% with proper training. Our ACL injury prevention classes for female athletes are based on researched methods of preventing ACL injuries and consist of strengthening techniques, core stabilization exercises, plyometrics (jump training), stretching, balance and coordination training. The class will also focus on proper jumping, landing and cutting techniques. The instructor is a CHKD staff physical therapist. We will perform a pre- and post-training assessment to determine improvements the athletes have made throughout the program. At the end of six weeks, the athletes will have a better chance at prevention of an ACL injury. The class meets every Mon. and Wed. from 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. The first 6 participants to send in payment will be accepted. To register mail the registration with payment.

Baby Care 101 at Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg
Class for expectant and newborn parents who want to learn about providing a safe and secure environment for their infant. Learn about how to bathe and comfort your baby, belly button and diaper care, how to position your baby for sleep and general household and car seat safety tips. Breastfeeding
Please join us for our free breastfeeding class. This is an introductory breastfeeding preparation class is designed to inform the prospective breastfeeding mother about the advantages of and contraindications to breastfeeding. Several topics are discussed including proper positioning; latch on tips, management of engorgement and sore nipples, as well as returning to work and maternal medications while workig. Emotion Coaching- Helping parents connect with their children (Professional progam)
Learn the five-step approach of the emotion coaching process and how to teach families to be more aware of a child’s emotions. Be able to recognize emotional expression as an opportunity to teach, listen empathetically and validate a child’s feelings. Learn how to label emotions properly, and help the child with problem solving or dealing with a variety of emotions. Discover how to help children create their own emotional banks to draw on in times of stress. Presented by Kohl's Cares for Kids Family Forum.

Extraordinary Measures- FREE Movie/Talk Event
Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell star in the upcoming movie inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease. Crowley (Brendan Fraser) teams up with a brilliant, but unappreciated and unconventional scientist, Dr. Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford) and together they form a bio-tech company focused on developing a life-saving drug. Great Expectations - The first three years
This workshop is designed to help parent's create nurturing environments, increase parenting confidence, and promote optimal physical, intellectual, language, and social/emotional development in their infants and toddlers. Parents will explore how to create consistent routines, set appropriate expectations and limits, and support learning through play and exploration. Brain research and the impact of early development on life long learning will also be discussed. Presented by Kohl's Care for Kids Family Forum.

Happiest Baby on the Block
This two-hour class for expectant and new parents will help Mom and Dad navigate the first months of Baby's life while learning how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes and help Baby sleep longer. Parents will learn about the calming reflex, the cuddle cure and the "5 Ss." All participants will receive "The Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp and a soothing sounds CD. Hearing Loss Safety:If You Can't Hear It, How Do You Avoid It?
This program is designed to both educate and meet the emotional needs of those who are deaf or hard of hearing and their family members, regardless of assistive technology preference. Activities are available for children ages 2 - 5. Refreshments will be provided. Access to communication needs to be requested two weeks prior to event.

How to Raise an Emotionally Intelligent Child (Parent Program)
Temper tantrums, whining, anger, sadness, fear and frustration are common emotions children and parents experience. The emotional communication between parents and children can impact how a child develops emotionally. Joan Hoffman, PhD, will discuss the importance of emotion coaching, which teaches children to understand and regulate their emotions, and how parents can help their children become emotionally intelligent with increased self-confidence, better health, better school success, and have healthier social relationships. Four techniques of effective conflict resolution will be discussed. Presented by Kohl's Cares for Kids Family Forum.

This is a newborn infant massage class for expecting and new parents. Parents will learn simple infant massage techniques designed for infants from birth to 6 months.
