Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

NICU Nurses caring for a small infant.

The NICU at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters is a 56-bed (growing to 63 in August), Level IV, neonatal critical care unit dedicated to providing comprehensive care for sick neonates and support for their families.

Approximately 700 babies are admitted to the NICU each year, many of whom are born extremely premature (some only 23 weeks from conception). Others suffer from severe heart, lung and intestinal conditions and require the use of sophisticated therapies, such as high-frequency ventilation and nitric oxide. The NICU team consists of highly trained professionals, including board certified neonatologists, registered nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, lactation consultants, and physical, occupational and speech therapists.

CHKD is seeking a Nurse Director of Patient Care Services for NICU. We are seeking a dynamic nurse leader with director experience with a large Level III or IV NICU. This candidate must have at least 3 - 5 years of management, with a style that includes being visible to staff and able to engage the physicians and staff. Patient quality and safety are top issues, as well as improving the already in place patient care processes. This director has the over all responsibility for approximately 186 FTE’s.

NICU nurse orientation is a preceptor program based on the novice-to-expert model. It is combined with didactic and interactive educational activities. The NICU considers every nurse’s long-term learning needs and offers educational opportunities throughout your employment. For the new graudate nurse, we offer an internship twice a year which will prepare the new nurse for the challenges of the NICU. Admittance to this program requires a prolonged student nurse time in a NICU (role transition or senior leadership hours) as well as a BSN.

The NICU is a wonderful environment to begin your career or sharpen your skills caring for critically ill infants! Come experience the rewards of building your pediatric career at CHKD. Our staff members work 12-hour shifts, and just every third week-end. We provide comprehensive compensation and benefits.
