Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The NICU at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters is a 56-bed, Level IV, neonatal critical care unit dedicated to providing comprehensive care for sick neonates and support for their families.
Approximately 700 babies are admitted to the NICU each year, many of whom are born extremely premature (some only 23 weeks from conception). Others suffer from severe heart, lung and intestinal conditions and require the use of sophisticated therapies, such as high-frequency ventilation and nitric oxide. The NICU team consists of highly trained professionals, including board certified neonatologists, registered nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, lactation consultants, and physical, occupational and speech therapists.
NICU nurse orientation is a preceptor program based on the novice-to-expert model. It is combined with didactic and interactive educational activities. The NICU considers every nurse’s long-term learning needs and offers educational opportunities throughout your employment.
